The Colour Wheel: 
The colour wheel is a guide used to understand
the theory of colour and mixing of colours that
go together well.

 
 
   
   
       
COLOUR DEFINITIONS:
Warm (Aggressive) Colours:  Reds, oranges and yellows.
Cool (Receding) Colours: Greens, blues and violets
Tint:      Colour + White
Tone:   Colour + Grey
Shade: Colour + Black

Hue: Hue is pure colour - any primary, secondary, or tertiary colour that is unmixed with black or white.  It can be another name for colour.

       

 

 

 

 

Mixing technique : start with the lighter colour, then carefully add the other colour until you have achieved the desired shade.

Primary Colours

Red, blue and yellow – these colours cannot be mixed from any other colours.  All other colours are derived by combinations of these colours.

Secondary Colours:

Two primary colours mixed together resulting in orange, green, and violet.

Intermediate Colours:

One primary and one secondary mixed together.

Colours that go together

Complementary Colours:

Two colours on directly opposite sides of the colour wheel, which when placed next to each other make both appear brighter.

Triadic Harmony:

Three colours spaced equally apart on the colour wheel.

Split Complementary:

A colour and two colours next to its complement con the colour wheel.
